I fell in love with a wine while filming 'TRAINSIPPING'.It was the Nicolas Bazan 2008 'Una Vida' Pinot Noir. I described it as follows: intense violets, perfumed talc lavender notes & raw vanilla extract A spectrum of red & black fruit peak on the palate then come down with a smooth, sultry mouth feel. Firm, finite flavors are light to the touch & lovely through the finish. This wine made me thirsty for more from Nicolas Bazan. And so, I started to do my homework. My homework resulted in a subsequent reading assignment, as I learned that not only was Dr. Nicolas Bazan into wine. He was into words as well. In fact, he wrote a book entitled Una Vida, sharing the same name of the wine I just fell in love with. Head of the LSU Neuroscience Center of Excellence, Dr. Bazan wrote this story summarized by Leeza Gibbons, founder of Leeza's Place for families of Alzheimer's victims, as follows: "...a hero's journey that leads a haunted neuroscientist through the mystery of jazz, the alleys of New Orleans... and the labyrinth of the mind." I'll be honest. I'm not much of a voracious reader. However, the wine I tasted, along with the woman's description of the story, made me compelled to read the book. Once I opened it, I found it hard to close. It was a book about Alzheimer's. While I knew almost nothing about the disease, the story absolutely consumed me. With each chapter I became more fascinated with the disconnect between memories made & memories lost. I noted how many memories I've both secured & summonsed with a bottle of wine. There are wines that remind me of my great grandfather's musty, leather suitcase. Others remind me of reaching for the cinnamon in the back of my grandmother's cupboard while she attempted to teach me how to make an apple pie as a young girl. Still, there are others that bring me back to milestones in my life, like the '83 Dom Perignon that my husband & I sipped in the back of a limo on the way from our wedding to our reception. Getting back to the book, I also noted how many times too many bottles of wine had resulted in not being able to remember the night before. But what if you couldn't remember any of your nights before? What if your entire past was erased altogether? Alzheimer's is a disease of disconnection that severs a person from their past. That said, I've decided to dedicate myself as an advocate for Alzheimer's research. I've created a project entitled SAVOR. It offers consumers a NEW way to taste wine. With no points to process or scores to sum up, SAVOR offers an abstract experience for tasting wine in a way that makes each pour personal and every sip special. Northwest Wines To You has proudly partnered to support SAVOR and the noble cause it funds. 10% of all proceeds from SAVOR purchases will be donated directly to Alzheimer's research programs in an effort to find a cure that will preserve & protect our greatest gifts - our minds. So, you now have the opportunity to "sip to support". I am proud to announce that "THREE BLIND BOTTLES" is the first selection available through SAVOR. It's a blind tasting experience in a box that provides a lesson you can lap up. "Never judge a book by its cover or a wine by its label." Cheers to supporting a cause one sip at a time! ![]() Last month, Northwest Wines to You partnered with West Hills Village and Rehab in Portland for a fundraising event to support Alzheimer's research. Rebecca Marie Pittock-Shouldis, winemaker for Ghost Hill Cellars and the Northwest Wine Correspondent, Allie Merrick, poured wine donated by Northwest Wines to You in an evening filled with the sounds of music played by a jazz duo, accompanied by the conversation and laughter shared by guests. ![]() The wine featured for evening had an identity that was concealed. While this was not a masquerade ball, the wines were masked by black tissue paper. With their identities concealed, the wines were tasted by guests with not prejudgement. Everyone who sipped and savored relied on their senses to define the wine in words all their own. SAVOR tasting cards (part of the Three Blind Bottles package) were available for making wine notes. ![]() In addition to pouring wine, Northwest Wines To You donated a SAVOR Tasting Experience, which included a signed copy of Dr. Nicolas Bazan's novel - Una Vida,a story about Alzheimer's. It's a tale described by Lisa Gibbons, founder of Leeza's Place for the families of Alzheimer's victims, as follows "...a hero's journey that leads a haunted neuroscientist through the mystery of jazz, the alleys of New Orleans...and the labyrinth of the mind." The author, Dr. Nicolas Bazan, is an internationally recognized neuroscientist and the Director of the LSUHSC Neuroscience Center of Excellence. In addition, he owns of Nicolas Bazan Wines. One of the wines he makes shares the title of his novel. Una Vida, which translates to One Life, is a Pinot Noir, a novel and (coming soon) a motion picture. ![]() Ding! Ding! Ding! Round 1 of the NWWTY 2012 Tasting Games will soon begin. Our first virtual tasting features Nicolas Bazan Wines. Dr. Nicolas Bazan, owner of Nicolas Bazan Wines, will be joining me on Wednesday, February 25th at 6:00pm PST to share the story of his wine. Not only will we be talking. We’ll be tasting as well. (Yes. I love my job.) The 2007 Mis Nietos, 2008 Una Vida & 2009 Haydee will be opened & explored, as I will be joined by the first tasting team to compete in the 2012 Tasting Games - the Blue Tooth Wine Society from Arizona. Together we’ll define each wine in our own words as we share our thoughts on what we see, smell & taste. During this virtual tasting, the team will gain participation points for every comment they contribute to the conversation. Here’s a little prelude to the pouring. Dr. Nicolas Bazan is a neuroscientist who resides in New Orleans. He is the Director of the Neuroscience Center of Excellence at the LSU Health Sciences Center. Born in Argentina, his dedication & devotion to studying the mind brought him to New York (Columbia University) and Boston (Harvard) for his education. A neuroscientist by day, Dr. Bazan became a novelist by night. He wrote a story named after the main character in his book - ‘Una Vida’ which translates to ‘One Life’. Another translation to mention is that of his book being translated into a movie that is soon to be released. A book. A movie. It doesn’t stop there. Una Vida is also a wine. The Nicolas Bazan Una Vida Pinot Noir has a story all its own to tell. Want to join us for the first virtual tasting of the 2012 Tasting Games? We’d love to have you join us as we taste the three expressions of Pinot Noir from Nicolas Bazan Wines and talk to Dr. Nicolas Bazan himself. As a spectator, you are certainly welcome to sip along at home and participate in our online conversation if you wish. Here’s what you will need to do. 1) Click HERE to order the wine we’ll be tasting (at a discounted rate for the occasion). 2) Get online and go HERE on Wednesday, January 25th at 6:00pm PST.
