Vintage Notes:
2008
proved to be a trying growing season with a well deserved reward in the
end. The vintage started out about 4 weeks late with bud break around
the first week of May. The growing season had few heat spikes and small
amounts of rain through the summer. The clusters were small and tight
with smaller than average berry sizes. Miraculously the growing season
was extended deep into October with average day time temperature around
60°F which allowed the fruit to fully mature without any spikes in sugar
accumulation. We were able to harvest the grapes
at their peak and make a wine that is lower in alcohol, has pleasant
red fruit flavors and has great structure while still remaining elegant
in style.
About the Wine:
The 2008 Johan Vineyards Three Barrel
Pinot Noir is made from the winemaker’s choice of the best grapes grown
in estate vineyards. Since 80% of the grapes at Johan are sold to other
premium wineries, this allows us to choose the best grapes for our
wine. The Three Barrel is made from the winemaker’s
three favorite barrels and is chosen to produce a wine that is made for
its age ability. The grapes used in this wine are solely from block 4,
which is Pinot Noir clone 115. This Pinot Noir was fermented with 100%
whole cluster and native yeasts. It was aged in 33% new French Oak for
18 months. Then it was bottle aged for another 12 months prior to its
release in May 2011. The
goal of this Pinot Noir is to make the best wine possible from our
estate vineyards that will have the ability to age gracefully for
decades. The Three Barrel is made to have complexity, balance and elegance. It is the best representation of what our vineyards can do.
