Vineyards:
Meadowlark Hill, Paradox and Upper Five
(all Rogue Valley)
Production: 150 cases
The 2009 Rogue Valley Syrah is a blend of three vineyards in
the Rogue Valley that all sit above 2,000 feet in elevation. The 500 feet difference between the valley
floor and the respective vineyards makes quite a difference in the wine. We get slower ripening up there resulting in
more aromatic (and dare I say French style) and pretty style of Syrah. We also get lots of wind in the upper elevations
resulting in thicker skins and more tannin and color. The nose has blueberry fruit, smoke, and
violet. The palate is rich yet bright
with the boysenberry added to the abundant blueberry. Bacon and sweet spice are also there with a
fair amount of tannin that balance this unctuous wine. The finish is sweet
blueberry liquor textured with tannin, lengthy but asking for some food (or
time in the bottle) to smooth out the finishing tannin.
