Barbara Thomas Wines
The Earth.
Barbara Thomas Wines is a small family-owned winery, named after our children Bobbi and Tommy. Our family vineyard, Vigna Giovanni, named after Chuck’s Italian grandfather, is located in the Yamhill-Carlton District AVA , and is situated in the eastern hills above the small rural towns of Carlton and Yamhill, Oregon, approximately 35 miles southwest of the Portland metropolitan area. Our land slopes gently southwest from an elevation of 550’ down to just under 500'. Our ancient marine sedimentary soils, the oldest soils in Oregon, are course-grained and well-drained and offer up a distinctive spicy minerality.
The Vine.
The vineyard was planted in 1983 and consists of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Riesling plantings. Our vines are exposed to warm days, cool nights, and a breathtaking view of Oregon’s coastal mountain range. We believe in sustainable and eco-friendly farming, so we use only natural farming methods in the vineyard. We carefully choose only certified organic sprays, and we never use systemic herbicides or pesticides. We work with nature to tend and nourish soil and vine, gently encouraging them to sustain themselves and each other. In return, they offer us a fruit that is earthy, spicy, and a true expression of this special place.
